The passionate venture of a cake enthusiast, Tartisan is a cafe dedicated to making simple, artisan baked goods, all handmade on site. Our design role was to create a complementary experience and allow their offerings to shine.

Within a small footprint tenancy, built-in bench seating provides the space efficiency required and maintains a freedom to the space to draw attention to the coveted cake counter. Conceived as a large wooden chopping block, the counter allows cakes to be rustically arranged on top of it. Surrounding it, a natural and earthy material palette acts as the backdrop for the varying seasonal food offerings.

Existing characterful finishes such as the face brick wall and existing pine ceiling maintain some patina and crafted and honest timber detailing provides warmth and expression. Materials selected were all readily available and easily workable to fit the short design/build timeframe and budget.

With much of the tenancy allocated to the commercial kitchen, a large window between front of house and the kitchen offers customers the opportunity to connect the food offerings with process and ‘making’, whilst benefitting staff with a comfortable workspace with natural light and outlook
